If you have parklife, I just learned you can place assets outside of park areas on a road, which is a massive upgrade to some of my plazas. Try to avoid "empty grassy"spaces by filling them with either trees, zoned buildings, and/pathways and fences. In order to get a realistic look, it takes a lot of time detailing seemingly pointless areas. I like the vanilla suburbs for my main suburban districts. Also keep in mind that different map themes offer different trees to decorate(pine trees are rare in the tropics and palms rare in colder climates). I'm a big fan of the european theme for the main city with north american style skyscrapers. University city or European suburbia are usually my choice for small forest/farm town-esque suburb vibes.
